UPDATED May 26, 2005

May 26th, 2005

Well, the last update that I wrote never got posted, so it's making it onto the website today! Thanks to Mikey Mind and Nate Bedortha for the help getting the website current. Thanks also to Jesse of Know Crap for all of his help with the website for the last three years.

Now, how much has changed since those heady days back in February? Plenty. The second pressing of the Observers LP sold out really fast. It's gone! In order to keep up with the demand, I have ordered a much larger third pressing. This time around there will be 2000 copies made!! Holy crap! As mentioned earlier, this pressing will have different colored labels. The silver labels have been retired for the Observers LP, for this pressing they are beige labels with maroon ink.

Check out The Observers live in your area soon! They are touring wildmen!! They leave town On Friday, May 27th with The (amazing!) Clorox Girls for a trip across Canada and the eastern and northern USA. Then in August they'll be all over Europe, spreading their message of malancholy to the continental masses. The Plan R 7" is delayed again. Soon, I expect that money will start shooting out my ass, and I will be able to afford this project. In the meantime, hurry up and wait. I am out of the few extra copies that I had of their "My Friend Is Dead" 7", so please don't ask me for them, bug Tucker instead.

February 2nd, 2005

Here it is, at the urging of adorable foreign-exchange-punk Vinny, the first update for the new year. The theme of the year is "Live The Dream!", a slogan that I swiped from the walls of a Planet Bingo, in Vancouver, B.C. I spent part of Boxing Day there with my friend Christa. As I looked around at the collection of chain-smoking old people, and desperate gamblers compulsively daubing their bingo cards, I was struck by the sad absudity of the sole commandment printed in foot high letters that adorned the walls. I'm not much for New Years resolutions anymore, so having a theme for the year seemed like a better idea. I'm glad to have chosen one that is so universally applicable. Slept through the work day? Live The Dream! Taking a second helping of dessert? Live The Dream! Spending your rent money on Vinyl Warning records? Live The Dream!

OK, now on to actual news! Sales of The Observers LP have really been picking up, a bit faster than I have been able to keep up with. As a result, I am currently out of the album in both LP and CD formats. I have ordered more LPs, and the second pressing should be here in a couple of weeks. For those keeping track of nerdy stuff like this, there has been only ONE pressing of the Observers LP so far. All 600 copies of the first pressing were on red vinyl with silver labels. the second pressing will be 400 copies on black vinyl with silver labels. The third pressing will probably be on black vinyl, but will have different colored label. I'm guessing white labels, but we'll see.

If you want to hear more music from The Observers, you can soon. They will have two new 7"s coming out in the spring. One will be on local hero Jonny Cat Records, and the other will be on the awesome Toronto label Deranged. Deranged will also be re-issuing their "Lead Pill" 7", which was originally released by Super Secret Records out of Austin. If you have that pressing of the record, hold on to it and feel special! You can say you were hip to them way back when.

Thanks to the staff of MAXIMUMROCKNROLL, for loving the hell out of the Observers album! In their year end, best records of 2004 roundup "So What's Left Now" (No one cares to know this, but I thought I'd share anyway. It drives me completely crazy that Doug wouldn't punctuate the album title with a question mark. Try saying it as a statement, with no upward inflection at the end. You can only do it by talking like a robot!! Yes, I already know that I am uptight...) made it onto most of the lists, and several folks said that it was their favorite album of the year. Hot damn! Golnar and crew will be geting their payola in the form of Voodoo Doughnuts this year. Check out their "Best Of 2004" radio show (two parts even!), The Observers are the first band to get played!

Speaking of zines, how would you like a free copy of The Observers CD? You can get oine by subscribing to Razorcake zine! Look for the subscription card in their next issue, it should offer a free copy of the CD with a paid subscription to their zine.

The Plan R "Smash The State (Of Oregon)" 7" should be coming out in late March. I hope. If not, it shouldn't be out not too long after that. Sorry about the uncertainty, the delays will only be due to financial reasons. What can I say, the barbering trade doesn't pay like it used to. Their debut, the "My Friend Is Dead" 7" on Blind Spot Records just got a well deserved great review in MRR that goes like this: "Portland just keeps cranking out the punk gems. PLAN R play some rocking, early 80s SoCal-inspired punk rock. they are thrashy and punky, yet maintain a sense of melody. PLAN R comes complete with some Rollins-esque vocals supplied by singer Colin, who also does time with the Observers. Kick ass. (JF)" I have a few copies of this 7" (limited to 300 hand-numbered copies) available for mailorder (email me for availability before ordering, please.), or you can pick it up from the excellent Know Crap mailorder website.

Oh, one last thing about The Observers, they're doing three tours this year. One out to texas and back, one across Canada (possibly with the amazing Career Suicide down the east coast and back, and one to Europe. The first one is starting to come together as far as booking goes, so here is a rough outline. Check the shows page on the Observers websitefor updates and more information.

Hmm... Someday soon these will get to happen more frequently. It hasn't happened yet, but someday!

The Observers LP is out and selling fast. I am very nearly out of the first pressing of 600 on red vinyl. MAXIMUMROCKNROLL gave it a mind blowingly great review, and the record made it into 9 people's Top Ten lists!! Hot damn! The CD has an extra song, and let me tell you, I am not happy about that. Ideally, the extra track would have been on the LP, not the damn CD, but it just wouldn't fit. Thanks to the band for going on a five week US tour in support of the record, that always helps! If you haven't heard their 7" on Super Secret Records, check it out!

The next release on Vinyl Warning will be releasing is the PLAN R "Smash The State (OF Oregon)" 7", sometime in January. This is probably the most Hardcore of any records that I have released, but I assure you, it's great!! The band features Colin of The Observers "singing" hilarious early '80s HC. These guys have some of the most rabid local fans ever, and their live shows are out of control! They played a show in a basement this summer, and the kids were so excited that they danced their way right through a wall!

In other news, The Diskords keep getting better. They are recording their second LP for Dirtnap Records soon, and releasing it in March. Their new songs are fantastic, and I'm sure the album will be a hit.

On a sad note, both The Triggers and Electric Eye have broken up. Thanks for all of the great shows, good times, and doing records with me, Portland will miss you. Both bands have more records coming out on various labels, so look out for those.

March 8th, 2004

Well, at last an update! Thanks to Jesse from Know Crap, and Mikey Mind (of The Minds and The Observers) this should be able to happen much more frequently.

The Diskords LP and CD is finally out (since December) and selling well. If you haven't heard their 7" on Dirtnap, check it out! It rules!!

The next Vinyl Warning release (Warning no. 8) will be an LP and CD (and possibly a small run of cassettes!) by the great Portland band The Observers. This band came up out of the ashes of The Speds, but has really evolved into something unique and great. The have some very catchy sing along parts, but also a very dark and moody feel to all of the songs. Look for this record in May or so. I do not forsee the delays that plagued the Diskords album (but then again, I didn't forsee those either, did I?) The Observers just opened up for The Subhumans (UK, not Canada) at the enormous Crystal Ballroom, here in Portland. It was packed, and the kids went nuts for the melancholy anthems that the boys were playing for them! It sure was funny to see them on that huge stage though!

The Exploding Hearts 7" is indefinetly OUT OF PRINT. I'm sorry, believe me. I don't have any for sale. I still think about them every single day. Terry is working on a new band with Gabe (of the Riffs) that should be amazing.

I'm out of stock of the Diskords and Electric Eye 7"s. Check the mailorder sites mentioned on the contact/ordering info page, some of them might have these. I will re-press these, but not right away.

Lots of folks have sent their demos in lately, so I figured that I should say something. Vinyl Warning is a Portland, Oregon record label. If I won the lottery, I would love to put out records by bands from all over the world, but as it is, I can't. I have the funds and time to put out a few records per year by the best Punk, Garage, and Power Pop bands that Portland has to offer. If you want to send in your bands demo, go right ahead! I do a radio show here in Portland called Life During Wartime, and will likely play a song or two from your demo on there. (Please include a track listing. Thanks.)

(l to r) Matt, Terry, Jeremy, and Adam

My heart is broken right now. I heard the news about the accident early Sunday afternoon, and have been reeling since. It is so difficult to believe or accept that three friends, three incredibly talented friends are gone. I was lucky enough to be at the first Exploding Hearts show, and was a fan from the first chorus. I am thankful for every time that I got to see them
perform, and every sarcastic wisecrack that I heard from them. Jeremy, Adam and Matt, you will be sorely missed, but never forgotten. Thank you.

Van accident claims three lives
07/20/2003
Associated Press

COBURG, Ore. - A van flipped over on Interstate 5 just north of Eugene early Sunday, killing three people and injuring two.

Oregon State Police say the victims apparently were members of a band traveling from San Francisco to Portland.

Witnesses told police the van left the freeway at about 6 a.m. and hit gravel, tried to get back onto I-5 and rolled over, closing northbound lanes for more than three hours.

Two passengers, Jeremy Gage of Beaverton, 21, and Adam Cox, 23, of Escondido, Calif., were thrown from the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, Matthew Fitzgerald, 20, of Portland, died at a hospital.

Terry Six, 21, and Rachelle Ramos, 35, both of Portland were treated for apparently minor injuries.

Police said only Ramos was wearing a seatbelt.

Well, after a year of putting out records together, VINYL WARNING is now a one man operation. Mr. Means is too busy with his many publishing persuits to throw money away on Punk records anymore. Best of luck to him, and a world of gratitude from me.

The DISKORDS full length is moving at a snails pace torwards completion, but have faith folks, it will happen!! I hope that at least the CD's will be available by July 31st, the day berfore the boys head out on their first tour! Check out their website for updates on tour dates. Speaking of which, they finally bought a domain name, and so now have a new website. It looks sharp, check it out here.

THE EXPLODING HEARTS 7" will have a THIRD pressing soon, with an entirely new cover! It looks really great, you're gonna love it!

March 9th, 2003

OK, lots of news this time!! We have just taken steps to ensure that we never go so long with out an update again!!

First off, THE FLIP-TOPS 7" is finally out!! Grab some copies while we still have some green vinyl left!

We have signed on with Road To Ruin Distribution!! This should help us get into a lot more stores and save us some hassle. This is an exclusive distribution arrangement, so if you want copies of our records for your store, mailorder or distribution, you will have to talk to the very friendly Pat at Road To Ruin. This also means that we cannot do trades with other labels, sorry! To reach Road To Ruin, check out their website here.

We are sold out of the colored vinyl of ALL of our records, except THE FLIP-TOPS 7"!! Sorry folks, but the rest are GONE! Check eBay...

The Re-pressing of the "Anatomy Of A..." compilation is taking longer than it should, sorry. Hopefully we will have copies available by the end of March.

In upcoming releases news, we are going to release the debut full length from THE DISKORDS!! The boys have already recorded the album, and it sounds AMAZING!! Look for a much expanded sound, and more blazing Punk Rock from these guys. The album is as yet untitled, but we can tell you that it will be released on both limited edition colored vinyl and CD. The CD will have 13 tracks, while the LP will have 14 (all original) tracks! That's right, the VINYL gets the bonus track!! We hope to release this in June or so, we'll keep you posted.

THE EXPLODING HEARTS 7" was called "Hands down, the best single of 2002." in the March issue of MAXIMUMROCKNROLL. They also said that THE TRIGGERS 7" "(is a) fucking great record.". Also, one or both of these records made it onto ten of the fifteen staff Top Ten lists!! Whew!

November 24th, 2002
THE TRIGGERS 7" and THE EXPLODING HEARTS 7" are both out now, and available for mail order.

Also, as of today, the "Anatomy Of A..." compilation 7" is available!! The covers look great!! The vinyl is the color of toothpaste! It's bright milky green, like an after dinner mint or something. We will only have a few of these available for mailorder at first, and only the first pressing will be on the colored vinyl, so snatch them up quick!! If you are in Portland, and over 21, come down to the record release show tonight at Ash Street.

The FLIP-TOPS 7" should be out by X-mas! We had a hell of a time with getting the cover art formatted properly, but now it is ready and will go to the printers next week. Hot damn!

Congratulations to THE DISKORDS on their one year anniversary! Teddy said that he is 3 inches taller than he was when they recorded their 7" (in April)! They keep getting better and better, look for their debut full length to be released by VINYL WARNING in the new year.

October 1st, 2002
THE TRIGGERS "Gasoline" 7" is slightly delayed. We got the covers back, and they have to be re-done. Sorry! Look for it in two weeks or so. I will update as we have a better idea of when it will be avaialble. The band are grabbing half of the colored vinyl, so we will only have 100 copies of the Nacho Cheese color. They are going on a West Coast tour starting October 31st, make sure to check them out in your area! We will post tour dates soon.

THE EXPLODING HEARTS 7" will be out in three weeks, that's October 21st! People are already trying to order it!

"Anatomy Of A..." is the title of the four label / four band collaborative split 7" that we are a part of. There will be a picture of the cover, and a full description up here in the next week or so.

Now Wave has done a review of the ELECTRIC EYE 7"! Read it here.

We're starting to get some reviews of our records in!
So far, MAXIMUMROCKNROLL loved THE DISKORDS' 7". They gave it a great review and it made it onto four seperate top ten lists in the October, 2002 issue! Yay!

Shredding Paper magazine also gave the Diskords 7" a thumbs up review!

Razorcake zine hasn't reviewed any of our records yet, but the Diskords 7" made it to #6 on the Underground Medicine Top 20 list in issue #10.

Also, Bryce Dunn (of The Smugglers and New Town Animals) wrote a great review of both THE DISKORDS' and ELECTRIC EYE 7"s in The Discorder, a publication of CITR radio in Vancouver, B.C. Check it out here!

There is an very, VERY enthusiastic review of THE DISKORDS' 7" on the Now Wave Zine website!! Check it out here!

THE FLIP-TOPS have recorded their 7" for us, and we have sent it off to the pressing plant! There is still some debate as to what the cover will look like though. There will be a picture of it posted as soon as it's done. Check out their newly added MP3 below!

We will also be co-releasing a 4 label / 4 band compilation 7" sometime in November. THE ELECTRIC EYE will be representing VINYL WARNING with another ass kicking track! The other labels / bands that are taking part are: Extra Ball Records (Multiball mag.) / THE HUNCHES , Jonny Cat Records / THE TRIGGERS , and Jealous Butcher / CAPTAIN VS. CREW.
